Introduction
We have seen the Formosan perpetual calendar in many pictures and movies and, at least I, had no additional information. The surprise was when, while investigating, I met the designer Enzo Mari again, and I learned the date of the creation of this extraordinary calendar: 1963!
Formosa is a concept as simple as it is brilliant. An aluminum plate (natural anodized or black) serves as a support for the removable PVC sheets that make up the date. The laser die-cutting and subsequent pressing of the tabs serves, on the one hand, to fix the support to the wall (by means of 4 screws, which will be hidden by the numbers and letters) and on the other, they will serve as a support to hang the PVC cards with the numbers and letters.
The whole is aesthetically separated from the wall by just 1 cm. The font used for the typeface is Helvetica and the creation is one of the classic pieces of the collaboration between Enzo Mari and Danese Milano.
The backing can be natural anodized or black. The typography can be black or red. The languages available for days of the week and months are: German, French, English and Italian.

Formosa is a wall calendar that is the result of the collaboration between Enzo Mari and Danese Milano. Re-edited again, 60 years later it maintains its validity as a mythical creation of object design.
Its extraordinary conception: a square with rounded vertices. Its ingenious mounting system: screwed to the wall with 4 tabs that separate it from the wall by just 1 cm. Its economy and lightness of materials: an aluminum foil as a support and die-cut PVC cards . And its excellent dimensions that, on the one hand, clearly facilitate the vision of the day and on the other hand, give that genuinely pop touch to any wall, bringing an additional personality to the decoration.

Who hasn’t seen this calendar, this perpetual calendar , in a movie, or in a TV series? Enzo Mari, in 1963!, in bold and with admiration, created a masterpiece. A design icon that has had to bere-edited to the delight of new generations. Thanks to Danese Milano we once again enjoy this jewel of design and at the same time, a single calendar for our entire lives! An example of early sustainability by the famous and advanced Italian designer. Too bad that the pandemic took it away from us in 2020.
May this small article serve as a humble tribute and remembrance to the great designer Enzo Mari.

Enzo Mari, one of the masters of Italian design. Novara 1932 – Milan 2020. A resident of Milan, where he trained as an artist, he worked from design to painting, from graphic design to installation design. A university professor and political activist, his characteristic style is based on minimalism and the use of concrete in certain new materials. It is considered one of the pillars of the history of Italian design. He worked with Danese Milano during a period of growth of the company and this allowed him to experiment with techniques, create installations, sculptures and products that would become milestones of Italian design.
The history of Danese Milano is a compendium of material culture, functions, pedagogy and practical beauty. The legacy of the founders, with the work of Bruno Munari®, Enzo Mari, Angelo Mangiarotti and Achille Castiglioni, can be found in the catalogue where it continues with the projects of Matali Crasset, Elliot Erwitt, Marco Ferreri, James Irvine, Naoto Fukasawa, Martì Guixè, Jonathan Olivares, Paolo Rizzatto, Francisco Gomez Paz, Jean Nouvel and BIG.
Danese Milano over the decades has assimilated the artistic gestures that had characterized its beginnings to mix and disseminate them in the methods and challenges that have developed new products.
