Born as a workwear, Levi’s 501 was many years ahead of fashion and has achieved a status that no other jeans has ever achieved: more than 2.5 billion jeans sold throughout its history.
James Dean and Marlon Brando used it in Hollywood , and since then, it has stood the test of time, fashion changes, technological advancements, and fierce competition.

Brief History
Levi Strauss was born in Bavaria, Germany, in 1829. In 1853 he moved to San Francisco, California, at the breath of the gold rush. Levi Straus & Co was the first company in history to produce jeans . In 1872, Jacob Davis, a Riga-born tailor, warned Strauss of a problem with the pockets of the jeans he supplied him.
Used by miners, the pockets of these trousers were unsewn as a result of the hard work of the mine. They found a solution: reinforce the corners of the pockets with copper rivets . Together they applied for a patent for the process, which was finally approved on May 20, 1873 , along with the trademark registered in the United States. Thus was born the first riveted pants from Levi’s and its production began.
Model 501
Levi’s 501 is the most famous pair of jeans in the history of denim (denim: fabric used in the manufacture of workwear). Denim is a 100% cotton woven twill fabric, with a white weave and indigo blue-dyed warp.
These jeans are made using 1,575 meters of denim fabric (without elastomer), 191 meters of thread, 5 buttons and 6 rivets for a total of 37 sewing operations.
They owe their name “501” to the lot number of the fabric of the first Levi’s that were produced with rivets.

Curiosities
We’ve seen Levi’s back waist tag (jacron) countless times, but what does it mean? Two horses pulling in the opposite direction of jeans expresses the great resistance of Levi’s jeans. On the other hand, this label lists: company name (Levi Strauss & Co.), founding city (San Francisco, California), Quality Clothing XX, Trade Mark , and U.S. Patent May 20, 1873.
Also noteworthy is the red textile label on the right back pocket. Sewn on the edge, between the gull wing motif and the top edges, it is a reference in the Levi’s world.

501 Original vs Fakes
How can we tell the difference between genuine Levi’s and fake Levi’s? It’s not easy, since, as you can imagine, counterfeiters are increasingly refining and making more versatile replicas. However, for years now, Levi’s has been “flooding” its garments with labels and signs of authenticity (to make counterfeiting more difficult). Please check them to make sure your Levi’s are original Levi’s.

Levi Strauss & Co. (also Levi’s) is an American apparel production company, known worldwide for the Levi’s brand of jeans. Founded in San Francisco, California (U.S.) in 1853 by Levi Strauss, Native Immigrant Jew from Buttenheim, from the Land , Bavaria, south of Germany.
In 1872, Jacob Davis partners with Levi Strauss to create and patent workwear reinforced with copper rivets. In 1873 they obtained the Registration of Trademarks and Patents and began the production of riveted jeans, initially called XX. In 1890 , the iconic “501 ” trousers appeared as such.In 1902 Levi Strauss died and his four grandsons took control of the company.
In 1905 1906, the earthquake of San Francisco destroys headquarters and two factories Levi Strauss & Co. In 1905 1928 Levi Strauss & Co. Register the name Levi’s as a trademark. In 1934 , the first women’s jeans emerged, the Lady Levi’s, with many features of the 501 jeans for men, with lighter fabric. They owe their femininity to a higher, tighter waist.
In 1936 , the “Red Tab” was placed for the first time on the right back pocket of jeans, differentiating itself from the competition. In 1961 came the “Slim fit” for slimmer silhouettes. In 1967, giving a boost to his brand and the red label, he redesigned his logo by placing a silhouette of bat wings at the bottom.
