Rimowa began its journey as a family business in 1898 in Cologne (Köln) under the name Koffermanufaktur. The first suitcases to leave his factory were made of resistant wood, seeking a light construction and better stability. In 1900 , Paul Morszeck became the sole director, separated from his founding partner Heinrich Görtz.
In 1937, created by the founder’s son (Richard Morszec) they manufactured the first aluminum trunk. RIMOWA comes from the abbreviation of its name. 1950 was the birth year of its iconic slotted aluminum design. Inspired by the golden age of aviation, they added distinctive grooves to their aluminum cases.
In 1970, the Tropicana design would be the first to include protection for sensitive filming, photography, and reportage equipment, protecting them from tropical humidity or cold.Arctic Region. In 2000, at the turn of the century, they manufactured the first polycarbonate luggage (very resistant to extreme temperatures, lightweight and durable). In 2001, the patented 8-wheel Multiwheel system features 360° swivel.
2012 marked the 75th anniversary of the aluminum suitcase, and 2018 marked the company’s 120th anniversary. Today, Rimowa is considered a world leader in the manufacture of luxury luggage. Belonging to the LVMH business group, it is a fully consolidated company and the undisputed leader in its sector.
