Jonathan Livingston Seagull is a fable written by Richard Bach, about a seagull and his learning about life and flight. Published in 1972, it soon became a bestseller on the campuses of U.S. universities. By the end of the same year , one million copies had been printed, making it the best-selling book on the New York Times list for 38 weeks.
I bought this book at the end of 1974 to do a 5th year Baccalaureate project and I remember it with nostalgia. It was one of my first books and I recognize, over the years, the influence it had on my way of thinking.

Synopsis
Jonathan Livingston only practices his flight and doesn’t do what the rest of the seagulls do. They try to make him change since they don’t see it as normal to spend the day doing pirouettes in the air instead of looking for food. He continues to practice new pirouettes, he was the first seagull to do aerial acrobatics.
One day, it soared so high that it plummeted out of control and crashed into the water. When he came to his senses he promised to be like the other seagulls, but instantly, he broke his promise, rising 700 meters high at night (seagulls do not fly at night). When he returned to the flock there was a meeting of the Council and he was summoned. The Council exiled John.
One day as he was flying, two seagulls approached him. One told him to fly high, very high because he had to move on to a new stage. And all three of them rose until they disappeared into the sky and plummeted. But Juan wanted to be free, his freedom was to fly and do acrobatics. Dying in the line of duty didn’t matter to him. Freedom was the greatest reward for a seagull.
John came to a society where all the seagulls enjoy their beautiful flight. He got to do all this after working alone and can become the leader of the flock.
Will he be able to forgive the flock and learn? Will he fly with them again? Love, respect, and forgiveness are equally important, as are freedom.
The Movie
Jonathan Livingston Seagull was released in 1973, based on the novel by Charles Bach , was directed by Hall Bartlett and has the soundtrack created by Neil Diamond, obtaining a Grammy Award in 1974 in the category of best soundtrack.

Reflexion
We all have a Jonathan Livingston Seagull inside us, because we all have a spirit of self-improvement, since we all have something to learn. As I said, over the years, reviewing what I consider to be the best sentences in this story, I realize that there is so much to do!
But, we must be patient, yet tireless. We can make mistakes, but we must learn from our mistakes. We have no limits, we believe in ourselves. So, let’s be free, let’s fly!

Richard David Bach (born June 23, 1936) is an American writer . Known for his popular novels of the 1970s: Jonathan Livingston Seagull and Ilusiones, among others.
Bach expounds his philosophy on physical limits and mortality. To him, it’s just appearances. Bach is renowned for his love of flying and his aviation-related books. He has continued to fly as a hobby since he was 17 years old. Almost all of his work is related to flight and airplanes.
Among his most recognized works are: Nothing is random (1969), Jonathan Livingston Seagull (1970), Illusions (1977), The Bridge Across Forever (1984), To the other side of time (1993) and Fly with me (2009).
