Matsuda Sunglasses M5001
Recently added to the Matsuda catalog, the M5001 sunglasses represent a significant advancement over the Japanese manufacturer’s already admired “rimless” collection . On this occasion, as the title of this article reflects, the shape of the crystals is the “culprit” of this beautiful balance.
The exquisite cut of the glass and the smooth profiling of the optics are surprising, softening the right angles of the rectangles. Matsuda masterfully and with extraordinary taste wears these sunglasses that seem to levitate. The complement to these beautiful gray crystals (of the highest quality), is a minimalist frame composed of a bridge and temples finished in white engraved palladium.
The new M5001 series can be obtained with crystals in Grey, Sage Green, Orange Coffee, Violet Gradient and Blue Grey. The hardware and temples are made of lightened titanium, finished in 22K gold and other precious metals.
Price: €825.00

Background
A year ago we published the article Matsuda, the Japanese point of view, which was very well received and allowed us to discover a really differentiated product.
Mitsuhiro Matsuda ( ready-to-wear fashion designer) left us a sublime interpretation of what sunglasses should be. He combined Gothic architecture, Victorian art and traditional Japanese fashion and turned an ethereal product (sunglasses) into an eternal product (a cult object).
Her creations had an impact on the world of fashion and the careful manufacture of metals, acetate and lenses led to ” humble” glasses being considered “haute couture” fashion.
Technical data sheet

Feedback
With extraordinary quality, Matsuda presents us with absolutely unique sunglasses. In my opinion, a very advanced reinterpretation of rectangular optics. To highlight, without a doubt, the exquisite proportions of the rectangles, which adapt very well to various types of faces. Not to be forgotten is the extraordinary workmanship, both of the minimalist and ultra-light frames and of the carefully polished and perfectly bevelled crystals.
This is a pair of sunglasses with an overwhelming personality, not suitable for all audiences, but which will bring a plus of style to its lucky owner. Once again, Matsuda has shown the path of aesthetics, good taste and know-how.

Born into his parents’ home in 1934, Matsuda graduated from Waseda University’s school of education (1958). Later he completed a master’s course at Bunka Fashion College (1961), coinciding with Kenzo Takada, Isao Kaneko and Junko Koshino, with whom he became good friends. He designed for the company Sanai. In 1964, together with Takada, he embarked for Paris, where he was influenced by the Art Deco period, the metal industry of the 19th century and the details of the Gothic Cathedrals.
The resounding launch success of Matsuda Eyewear had its origins in the playful approach to eyewear, drawing inspiration beyond the industry and breaking new ground: eyewear as an element of fashion. Matsuda has been able to combine his innovative vision with the ancestral values of Japanese craftsmanship. All of Matsuda’s production is done in his own workshop in the city of Sabae (Fukui Prefecture, west of Tokyo).
His first creations are a perfect symbiosis of haute couture and architecture. He combined, with exquisite taste, Gothic architecture, Victorian art, traditional Japanese fashion and even American jazz. Since the brand’s inception, it has had its own identity: cultural heritage, craftsmanship and the future. At its core, it was about bringing art into fashion, turning the ethereal into the eternal.
In the 1990s, the Matsuda brand shut down its operations, leaving thousands of loyal fans orphaned . Even so, many of his items found a niche in the collector’s market, turning some of his glasses into true cult objects. In 2011, James Kisgen (former Sales Director of Cartier) relaunched the legendary brand into the future.
Today, Matsuda is one of the best Japanese eyewear brands, and worldwide it is one of the most original, creating trends and giving each customer unsurpassed quality.
