Radius Design (now Radius furnishing needs GmbH)

I was not surprised by the quote with which the Radius firm opens its small description “The best of the new corresponds to an old need”, moreover, I was not surprised to learn that Paul Valéry was its author. And, the appointment is selected knowingly. Valéry, writer, poet, essayist and philosopher (although he considered himself “anti-philosopher“), was the main representative of “pure poetry“, and his work, which can be defined as classical, is full of intellectuality, reflection and philosophy, to culminate, over the years, with the “cult of reasonableness”. In my opinion, this is where the thoughts of Valéry and Michael Rösing, CEO of Radius, converge, whose product development goes hand in hand with the intellectual and the reasonable.

It should also not be easy to combine a smart solution with a minimalist design and exceptional quality. I believe that a careful observation of what happens on a daily basis is necessary. I mean to see how the rolls of toilet paper have been placed since birth and visualize the sobriety of a die-cut and folded steel plate to house such an everyday and hygienic article and do it more original, most beautiful and more functional of what exists today.

Under these simple premises, the company was developing, between design awards and awards, a range of products characterized by their daily use, their originality, their excellent craftsmanship and their functionality without compromises. Another particular feature of Radius, a company located in Brüll (Germany), near Köln, is the almost exclusive use of metal for the realization of its creations, with stainless steel and aluminum being its main materials of use.

How to store firewood at home, or books, first aid kit, toilet paper, or how a mailbox, a bell or a coat rack should be are things that we have not asked ourselves because we have seen them solved a long time ago. Now we have the opportunity to turn “those little things” around and turn them into “little works of art”.

Even if we think we have already seen everything, we always have that feeling of admiration when we see a new object and think. “Why wouldn’t it have occurred to me?” The Overflowing originality of the products Radius I have been inspired by this article and sharing it with you gives me the opportunity to show you what I have learned in this assault.

Letterman 3

In this case, Radius has solved the design through an elegant rectangular prism finished with a lacquered tempered glass front that provides lightness. The lock, centered on the top of the glass, comes with 2 keys. It has a folding top cover that preserves the mail from inclement weather. Metal is still the protagonist, made by die-cut sheet, folded and powder-lacquered all the necessary compartments. It has a sufficient top slot for access to C4 envelopes without folding. A delicate bottom line without paint allows us to visualize if we have uncollected cards. Letterman 3 has motion-sensitive interior LED lighting (requires 3 AAA batteries, not included). Radius and Radius 2 doorbell switch

Of the many contacts I have today within the world of design, I have always perceived, as a majority opinion, the enormous difficulty of designing or redesigning (depending on how you look at it), simple elements of our daily lives. In the case at hand, the Radius and Radius 2 doorbell switches perfectly illustrate this predominant impression.

I have selected these two Radius objects for their pure, elegant and at the same time technological design. Ralph Herbs‘ design for Radius is sensational. The cleanliness, simplicity and technological aroma it gives off is very gratifying. I would say it invites you to knock on the door. For me, the really overwhelming thing about this design is to keep absolutely everything on the same plane, it is the fundamental difference from any other known doorbell button. All this free of visible fasteners and with a pristine appearance.

The realization, as it could not be otherwise, has been combined by a brushed stainless steel sheet. Circular, in the case of Radius, square with rounded corners in the case of Radius 2. Both solutions have concentric rings in the center that give the whole an innovative and tenological aspect. The visibility solution in dark environments has been made by means of a ring of LED light (5 colors: Blue, White, Orange, Red and Green). It is warned that in the case of power supply by alternating current (AC) it is advisable to acquire at the same time the Radius LED Converter that appears as an option in your online store.

Wooden Shelf / Wooden Tree

I am increasingly surprised by the Radius product range. His ingenuity and capacity for innovation are inexhaustible, provoking that ” emotion” that I always look for when I analyze in depth the products of a company.

In this case, I have included the products Wooden Shelf and Wooden Tree, which would come to be in Spanish: Shelf for firewood and wood tree. The first thing I notice when contemplating this unique ” work of art” is the almost complete invisibility of the product (in this case continent), leaving all the prominence to the firewood (the content). These metal shelves (of course!) are hidden leaving all the wooden logs visible, composing an interesting collage on the wall.

The product itself, like the great creations, is simple: a vertical post formed by a lacquered metal tube (trunk), from which come some metal shelves also lacquered (branches). Each shelf has 2 retainers (back and side) to hold the firewood. It is convenient, for aesthetics and to further accentuate the personality of this woodshed, that the wooden logs are at least 35.0 cms. long, thus achieving greater depth and aesthetics in the woodshed.

In the case of Wooden Shelf, the fixing is mechanical to the wall. Wooden Tree comes with a metal pedestal that allows you to place it anywhere. In both cases, as the firewood is separated from the ground at least 30 cms. Sweeping and collecting the remains of sawdust and bark is an easy task.

Books tree

Another example of featured content is the Books tree bookshelf.We continue with the invisibility game with which Radius causes a levitation of books placed horizontally. Everything starts from a clean design made by means of a metal tube and shelves made of sheet metal that are coupled to the tube almost at 90º, allowing the rest of the books and their stability horizontally. The whole has a striking aesthetic and again suggests the idea of “work of art”.

Despite its virtual invisibility, Books tree can come powder-lacquered in 3 colors (White, Grey and Black), can form a single stack of books (Single) or two (Double), and, also like Wooden Shelf can come with support.

Surely the series with more DNA Radius Design. A series of very simple accessories, clean (this is very common in Radius Design) and only in 2 colors: Black and White.

Everything has been designed and made with function in mind and with style neutrality, to reach the largest number of users. I emphasize the realization as always in aluminum sheet. powder lacquered and with very little manufacture, die-cut and at most one or two folds. The entire series comes with the option of product to be placed with adhesive or with mechanical fixation.

Pictograms

Continuing the line, concept and dimensions of the program House Numbers, the Pictograms series helps us in the world of signage. A fairly complete series of icons of very common use to identify and signal, both indoors and outdoors, different areas in an elegant way. Both the range of colors (White, orange, black and green), and the placement system is identical to those of the Home Numbers program, although, in this case, it is aimed at the business world and communities.

Made of brushed stainless steel sheet with the icon emptied of the circle and allowing to see the color of the lower metal disc. 2 magnets will fix the pictogram correctly. As before, simple and fast.

Available icons: Adult/child, child, café, restaurant, dog, escalators, fire extinguisher, reduced mobility, information, right/left, mail, mobile no, telephone, nursing, non-smoking, stairs, trash can, up/down, wifi.

Panels with solar lighting

To complete the signage chapter, Radius Design has a line of panels with solar lighting. Made of L-shaped folded aluminium sheet, they are available in 3 sizes (S: 305x50x110 mm. / M: 305x170x110 mm. / L: 425x310x110 mm. widthxaltoxfondo) and also in 3 colors (White, dark gray and black). In the upper part of the short wing of the L is located the solar collector, (interested in obtaining the greatest possible insolation); at the bottom of the wing is the LED lighting (3000K / 4W / 160 Lumen). Wall placement can be done by adhesive technique or by mechanical fixing.

During the day the collector will be powering the battery incorporated in the set (3000 mAh / 11.1 Wh / 3.7 V / 3 A), and once the sunlight disappears, the plate will light up with its battery . Depending on the accumulated energy, the illumination can vary between 6 and 12 hours.

The M format can hold laser-engraved number and name. The L format can even incorporate a directory or other data. The cost of this engraving ranges between 19,00 and 99,00 € (VAT included). Likewise, these formats can be placed with a metal post embedded in the ground (67 cm. minimum if it is only nailed and fastened with the ground, 40 cm. if it is with concrete). For a reason I do not know, this pole keeps hand and can only be placed on the right side of the plate. Cost of the pole: 170,00 € (VAT included) The S format is designed for illumination only.

First aid wall kit

I have left for the end the Radius Design product that always comes to mind every time I have a conversation about industrial design. And, in truth, conceptually its design is unsurpassed and impressive. All made on a stainless steel plate! You can’t do more with less!

This is a great innovation by Ulf Thomas Solbach for Radius Design. A very simple idea but extraordinarily visual and effective, perfectly fulfilling the objective that is proposed, locate the first aid kit at first glance and from the wall of the bathroom, access it quickly and comfortably. In this case, the form becomes function.

Made of stainless steel sheet, it has been carefully die-cut, polished and folded. It has holes to fix it mechanically to the wall. Inside it houses a nylon bag (obviously in deep red) that, as a ” Red Cross” announces clearly and forcefully the content for first aid. The bag contains all essential items in a basic nursing kit (gauze, scissors, tweezers, bandages, analgesics, etc …). Removing the bag from the stainless steel container is as simple as sliding it to one of its sides, we will immediately have it in our hands. A practical zipper gives us access to all the interior contents. There are replacement kits to replenish spent content.

This practical first aid kit is available in 2 versions: home and professional, for use at home or in an office or business.
