Blackwing 602, Introduction

Blackwing 602 is the brand and model that marked a before and after in the pencil industry. Considered the best pencil in the world, it reached a price of up to $40 per unit. Although not exactly the same as the 1934 original, it is still adored by artists all over the planet.

Its iconic slogan “HALF THE PRESSURE, TWICE THE SPEED” is still displayed on its metallic grey lacquered body.

It is made with genuine Cedar Incense wood (Calocedrus decurrens) and selected Japanese graphite (soft, dark and firm). It has its usual hexagonal body and its typical rectangular metal ferrule where the replaceable eraser is located.

It comes in a stylized square cardboard prism with 12 units.

Brief History

The Blackwing 602 is a pencil that stands out for its soft and dark graphite, its unique flat metal ferrule and its replaceable eraser. It was manufactured by the Eberhard Faber Pencil Company from 1934 to 1988, then by the Faber-Castell pencil company from 1988 to 1994 and by Sanford from 1994 to 1998.

Eberhard Faber Pencil Company began production in 1934. Its motto emblazoned on the body , “Half the pressure, twice the speed,” was intended to appeal to the stenographers of the time. The Blackwing 602 had the unique softness and smoothness of a 3B/4B mine with the wear of an HB mine. However, the 602 pen quickly evolved from an office tool to an artist’s tool.

Animators such as Chuck Jones, Don Bluth, authors of the stature of John Steinbeck, Truman Capote, E.B. White, famous composers such as Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, John Williams, Quincy Jones, playwrights, filmmakers, poets, etc… they used and exalted the Blackwing 602 pencil.

In 1994, the Sanford division of Newell Rubbermaid returned the pencil to its original mark: “Eberhard Faber Blackwing 602”. Years later, after the breakdown of the machine that produced the metal ferrule, production plummeted, ceasing in 1998.

Originally, the Blackwing 602 was sold at 50 cents per unit, after the cessation of its production, pencils were sold for 40 dollars.

In 2008, the California company Cedar Products acquired the Blackwing name and reintroduced the Blackwing 602 pencil in its Palomino division in 2011. The pen that is available today as Blackwing 602 is an approximation of the original (although it lacks the original graphite formula, it is very successful). Launched exclusively in pencils.com it is now also distributed to retailers around the world in blackwing602.com. A portion of the 602’s profits go to the Blackwing Foundation , which supports music and arts education in schools.

The Blackwing range is available in 4 lead types: Natural, 602, Pearl and Matte. It also has accessories for sharpening, conservation, help and erasing. On occasion, special commemorative editions are launched that feature differentiated finishes and leads.

Feedback

For pencil lovers, the Blackwing 602 is the Holy Grail. Its well-deserved fame has been forged in the drawings of Bugs Bunny, Disney, in the scores of John Williams and in the writings of Truman Capote and others. Its fame is accredited by the type of lead it uses (originally from Japan, it combines softness with duration and a dark charcoal grey colour typical of much softer leads). This “compromise” is unique to the Blackwing 602 and while other mines of the brand also offer very good results, the 602 stands out above all.

If you need a pencil for fast writing and smooth, this should be the first choice to consider. Even without the original formulation, it is still the best pencil in the world.

California Cedar Products Company has a long history of manufacturing wood sheets for the pen industry. For more than 100 years, CalCedar® products have been the standard for quality and craftsmanship in the industry.

The Berolzheimer family, since 19th-century Bavaria, has been involved in the pencil industry for seven generations. In the mid-19th and early 20th centuries, the main wood for pencils in the United States was eastern red cedar, which grows in every state in the Southeast.
