Madrid Book Fair, 84th edition

Every spring Madrid celebrates its traditional Book Fair, the meeting place for readers, authors, publishers and bookshops. As in most of its editions, El Retiro Park will be the meeting place for such a classic fair. Its almost 400 booths will show the main editorial novelties and will provide a place for signatures for prestigious writers.

The motto of this edition is “New York lights up the fair” and, in collaboration with the New York International Book Fair and Ibero-American departments of several universities, it tries to highlight the value of the New York that speaks and writes in Spanish.

History

The 1st Edition of the Book Fair was held in 1933, as part of the events of the Cervantes Week, from April 23 to 29. This first appointment was held on the Paseo de Recoletos in front of the Church of San Pascual.

The 1934 Fair, called “national and Hispano-American”, was held on the same stage from May 6 to 16 from “ten in the morning to twelve at night”. Before our Civil War, the editions of 1935 and 1936 were held, and later, they had a parenthesis until 1944. That year, under the name of National Book Fair, it was organized by the National Institute of the Book (INLE).

In 1967 the Fair was relocated to El Retiro Park as a result of the increase in requests for participation from booksellers, publishers and distributors.

It would be in 1982 when the Fair was renamed the Madrid Book Fair, and its organization was assumed by the Association of Bookstores of Madrid, together with the collaboration of the Association of Publishers of Madrid and the Association of Distributors (FANDE). In turn, it is inaugurated by Their Majesties. the King and Queen for the first time and, since then, every year uninterruptedly by one of its members.

Among the distinctions that this Madrid Book Fair has obtained throughout its history, it is worth highlighting the National Prize for the Promotion of Reading, awarded by the Ministry of Culture in 2003, and the Benito Pérez Galdós International Projection Award of the City of Madrid granted by the Madrid City Council in 2009.

2025 Poster

The poster for the 84th edition of the Madrid Book Fair is the work of illustrator Coni Curi and shows a Madrid bear (Reference sl symbol of the city) observing the New York skyline with a pack of books on which the famous Empire State Building stands.
