Grace is an iconic armchair. Conceived by the architect and designer Pietro del Vaglio, it fuses art and functionality. Not without a certain provocation, the idea is to integrate art into our daily lives through innovative and poetic designs.

Designed in 1994, this iconic piece is a contemporary work of art that transcends its function as a seat, evoking the early days of the Rolling Stones.

It is made on a metal structure covered with polyurethane and then covered with fabric. It evokes a feminine mouth with intense and marked red lips with a provocative pink tongue. It has a mechanism that allows it to move, adding dynamism and interaction.

Description

Designed in 1994, the Grace armchair incorporates, in a clear and evocative way, art within contemporary furniture. Its sculptural design evokes a female mouth with marked red lips and a prominent pink tongue.

It is later than the famous red tongue of “The Rolling Stones” (John Pasche, 1970) and also younger than Salvador Dalí and Oscar Tusquets ‘ design “Dalilips” (1972). For this reason, and although its clear influence can be recognized, it has become an iconic piece of contemporary art.

Despite its forced design, contained in supports, it fulfills its function as a seat well. Although its provocative nature is a source of comment, the admiration for this work by Pietro del Vaglio is unanimous. I can attest .

Mirabili incorporates artists and designers selected for their special skills and the poetic ensemble of their work. It tries to bring a collection of designs to museums, galleries and collectors through art. The works in the Mirabili collection, Arte d’abitare (Art of Living) are not designed only for contemplation, but are intended to interact in our daily lives.

Towards the mid-80s, Mirabili is a synthesis of the experiences of Sergio Cammilli, a protagonist of Italian design since the 60s. The interaction with other experts and artists has given life to this theoretical, practical and productive laboratory of works to renew our “Art of living”.

Pietro del Vaglio graduated in 1985 from the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples. After a few years dedicated to costumes and scenography, in 1987 he began his career as a designer for the Mazzoli firm.

In 1991 he opened his first interior design and planning studio in Naples, starting his collaboration as Artistic Director in Arcon (Bologna). In 1994 he created his famous Grace armchair. In 1995 he exhibited it at the Museum of Architecture and Design in Chicago, in an event dedicated to the 25 most interesting seats of the last 25 years (along with works by Philippe Starck, Tonucci, etc…).

In 2002 he founded Pietro del Vaglio Collezioni, producing sofas, armchairs and loungers. During these years, as an interior designer, he carried out projects in Switzerland, Russia and the USA. Numerous design magazines publish his creations. In 2014, AD Italia included him among the 13 designers who best interpret new design trends. That same year he opened a studio in Monte di Procida, with Michele Schiamo Moriello.

In 2018 he received the Naples Award of Excellence for his work as a designer around the world.
