Boby Cart, introductionn

The Boby Cart is an exercise in dynamism and versatility. Completely modular, this creation by Joe Colombo, allows 100% storage of a rectangular prism. Exhibited at the MoMA in New York, at the Milan Trienale and Smau Prize in 1971, it is an iconic piece of Italian design of the 70s, produced by B-Line.

Their idea is based on a base with 5 wheels to which they stack equal but configurable modules. In each module we can use 2 types of drawers: flat (3), deep (2), or without drawers. The ingenious drawers are pivoted on an external eccentric axis and are driven by external pressure. Other storage pockets (2) are on its sides. It offers 4 versions with 1, 2, 3 or 4 modules.

Made of injected ABS plastic, it is available in 7 colors (Blue, White, Light Grey, Dark Grey, Mustard, Black and Red). Dimensions: 420 x 430 x 315 / 525 / 735 / 945 mm.

Description

The Boby cart is much more than just a container, it is living design history. Built in 1970, and well ahead of its time, it redefined the design of the time and changed the standards of functionality. Joe Colombo defined a masterpiece.

The modular character gives a different stamp on its time. Intended for large production, Joe Colombo looked for a simple design for the Boby cart. The choice of ABS as the material (in which Joe Colombo had a lot of experience) was a success. ABS plastic supports any shape, is strong, lightweight , and allows for many colors.

The structure of the Boby trolley is simple: a base with 5 polypropylene wheels would accommodate identical but configurable modules of 420x430x200 mm. Each module can accommodate 3 flat or 2 deep drawers, or none at all. An eccentric metal rod ensures that they can be opened and closed with a very elegant external drive.

Once the modules are stacked, another 2 metal rods will adjust them to the base completing the assembly. For the meticulous, there is a lock option for the drawers.

The top lid, with reliefs, is designed to house small objects or to be covered with elegant oak, walnut, natural cork or mocha tops. Once coated, they form a flat, solid surface to support, for example, a printer, etc.

Depending on the modules selected, the Boby trolley can be configured in the following sizes: XS, S, M and L.

Feedback

I’m not sure, but I think the idea for this Boby cart came about when Joe Colombo was on his drawing board. I have always imagined the Boby cart to the right of cartoonists, artists and the occasional architect. The truth is that these activities are given a lot because of the enormous capacity of their containers and the perfect organization they achieve.

Today, in 2024 , the Boby stroller is more relevant than ever and, although versions, variants and other conceptual accessories have emerged, Boby is better, much better. Check it out.

B-Line was born from the desire that its founder, Giorgio Bordin, had to revive historical icons of Italian design. Works that disappeared and that, thanks to B-Line, we can enjoy again.

The most important case of this reissue policy is Joe Colombo’s Carrito Boby , although, it is true that he has subsequently collaborated with international designers for other products.
