Masters of Augusta

The The Augusta Masters is one of the four major tournaments on the men’s golf calendar and the first to be held every year since 1934. The final round of the tournament is usually held on the second Sunday in April.

Unlike the rest of the majors, the Augusta Masters has a fixed venue, the Augusta National Golf Club, a private golf club located in Augusta, Georgia, United States.

It is part of the PGA Tour and, among its advantages, the winner of this prestigious tournament is invited for life to celebrate it and also the other 3 major tournaments for the next 5 years. He also receives an invitation to play in The Players tournament for the next five years.

The most significant prize of the Masters at Augusta is not the economic one, but the coveted green jacket that identifies him as a member of the club. In addition, he receives a Gold Medal and his name engraved on the Masters Trophy. This trophy represents the club’s home house, was first awarded in 1963 and remains in the clubhouse. Since 1993 , a replica has been given to the winner. The finalist (2nd) receives a silver medal and, since 1978, a silver tray.

History

The origin of Augusta National Golf Club is due to the renowned golfer Bobby Jones, who wanted to build a golf course after his retirement. On the advice of Clifford Roberts (later president of the club), they found a plot of land in Augusta, Georgia. It was inaugurated and opened to the public in January 1933.

Throughout its history, 56 players have won the coveted green jacket. The winner of the Augusta Masters keeps it for a full year and returns it in the next edition of the tournament. Tradition also dictates that the winner of the previous edition will impose the jacket on the winner of the current edition.

American players (39) have won the most titles (64), Spanish players (4) have won 6 titles and South African players have won five.

Only 18 players have managed to win more than once, with the legendary Jack Nicklaus being the only player to have won 6 titles. Tiger Woods (5), Nick Faldo (3) and Bernhard Langer (2) are outstanding figures of golf in this mythical tournament. The Spanish players have won the following titles: Severiano Ballesteros (2), José María Olazábal (2), Segio García (1) and John Rahm (1).

Tournament Features

This tournament, due to the particularities of the course, presents some differences in the game compared to other majors. The first 36 holes (Thursday and Friday) are played in groups of 3 players.

When all players have played these holes, a cut occurs (elimination of players who have made more than a certain number of strokes). Players who make the cut do so if they meet any of these criteria:

  • The 50 players with the fewest strokes (including players tied with the player with the worst score of the 50)
  • Those players who have not made 10 strokes more than the best result.
