This is true in all areas of life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Personally<\/strong>, we have insurance for our <strong>house<\/strong>, our <strong>car<\/strong>, our <strong>dog<\/strong>, our <strong>health<\/strong>, etc&#8230; <strong>Professionally<\/strong>, controls and processes are also carried out to obtain <strong>correct levels of safety<\/strong> and <strong>maintenance of the facilities<\/strong> for their optimization over time.<\/p>\n<p>This set of actions and measures must also be carried out in our <strong>WordPress<\/strong>. We need <strong>security<\/strong> on our website, to protect it from <strong>hacker attacks<\/strong>, <strong>malicious software<\/strong> and <strong>annoying spam<\/strong>. We must also <strong>provide security and confidence<\/strong> to our users, updating and optimizing our website, both in its <strong>loading times<\/strong> and in the <strong>features<\/strong> and <strong>interaction options<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In short, good <strong>risk management<\/strong> is important. This is what we are going to talk about in this chapter.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Security_strategies\"><\/span>Security strategies<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To carry out <strong>proper risk management<\/strong> in our <strong>WordPress<\/strong>, we first need <strong>to evaluate the risks<\/strong> that we may encounter and, subsequently, protect our website with the <strong>appropriate tools<\/strong>. That is, carry out a<strong> security strategy. <\/strong>Do it, the sooner the better. You will not regret it and <strong>you will work more calmly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>When I started the project I installed a <strong>security plugin<\/strong> (<a title=\"Sucuri\" href=\"https:\/\/sucuri.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Sucuri<\/a>), a plugin to control <strong>brute force attacks and logs <\/strong>(<a title=\"Limit Login Attemps Reloaded\" href=\"https:\/\/www.limitloginattempts.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Limit Login Attemps Reloaded<\/a>), another plugin to <strong>control spam<\/strong> (<a title=\"Akismet\" href=\"https:\/\/akismet.com\/es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Akismet<\/a>) and, in addition, I had the <strong>security tools<\/strong> that my previous hosting (<a title=\"Ionos\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ionos.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ionos<\/a>) gave me. <strong>Too many tools<\/strong> (some of them very complex) and too much work.<br \/>I needed to simplify.<\/p>\n<p>Everything changed with hosting on <strong>Siteground <\/strong>and installing their <a title=\"Security Optimizer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.siteground.es\/wordpress-plugins\/siteground-security\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Security Optimizer<\/a> plugin, an extraordinary <strong>all-in-one security plugin that&#8217;s<\/strong> easy <strong>to set up<\/strong> and a <strong>full-time<\/strong> worker.<br \/>For <strong>spam<\/strong> I activated <a title=\"Google reCAPTCHA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/recaptcha\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Google reCAPTCHA<\/a> v3, which is the one that causes the least inconvenience to the user.<br \/>With these 2 tools I solved the security of my <strong>WordPress<\/strong>, and I started working with more peace of mind.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, although it is <strong>impossible to have zero risk<\/strong>, it is possible to have good tools to <strong>make it very difficult<\/strong> for the <strong>&#8220;bad guys&#8221;.<\/strong> Let&#8217;s see how these tools work:<\/p>\n<p>On the part of the <strong>Security Optimizer<\/strong> plugin, we control the following aspects:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Site Security<\/strong>: Protects system <strong>folders<\/strong> . Hide the <strong>WordPress version<\/strong>. Turn off the theme and plugin <strong>editor<\/strong> . Disable the <strong>XML-RPC<\/strong> file. You can disable <strong>RSS<\/strong> and <strong>ATOM<\/strong> feeds (in our case we enable them to favor users who follow us via <strong>RSS)<\/strong> Enable advanced <strong>XSS protection<\/strong> . Delete the <strong>Readme.html<\/strong> file by default.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Access security<\/strong>: Custom access <strong>URL<\/strong> . <strong>Login access limit<\/strong> (of URLs suspected of brute force attack). <strong>Identification of 2 access factors<\/strong> for administrators and editors. Deactivation <strong>of &#8220;common&#8221; usernames<\/strong>. <strong>Limitation of the number of access attempts<\/strong> (in our case, 3).<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Activity log<\/strong>: At all times we will have a <strong>record of the IP addresses<\/strong> that visit our website (type of visitor, IP, page visited and server response). We will be able <strong>to block the IP<\/strong> or <strong>see its activity<\/strong>. We can also <strong>order the registration<\/strong> by registration IP, by blocked accesses, obtain weekly reports and receive the activity log by e-mail.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Actions of a hacking action<\/strong>: We will be able to <strong>reinstall all the &#8220;free&#8221; plugins<\/strong> ,<strong> force the password<\/strong> reset to the users and <strong>disconnect<\/strong> all the users.<\/p>\n<p>On the part of <strong>Siteground hosting<\/strong> <strong>(GoGeek)<\/strong> we have the following tools:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Backup<\/strong>: <strong>Daily <\/strong>(possibility to restore files, database and e-mails). <strong>Create<\/strong> backup (always keeping 5 active), <strong>restore <\/strong>and<strong> download.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>SSL Manager<\/strong>: for each domain with <strong>Let&#8217;s Encrypt Wildcard<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; Force HTTPs: <\/strong>for all domains, presenting all our pages securely.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Protected URLs<\/strong>: If we wish, we can include <strong>URLs that are specially protected<\/strong> to prevent access to any user.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Blocked traffic<\/strong>: We can <strong>block IP addresses<\/strong> or all IP addresses from <strong>any country<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Site Scanner<\/strong>: <strong>Siteground&#8217;s optional tool that scans<\/strong> our website <strong>daily<\/strong> for threats. Check if our domain is <strong>blacklisted<\/strong> and <strong>all our URLs and files<\/strong> for malware. Reports automatically.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Backups\"><\/span>Backups<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What would we do without backups?<\/strong> I don&#8217;t know, the fact is that <a title=\"we\" href=\"https:\/\/encyclobjects.com\/en\/about-us\/\">we<\/a>, on some occasions, <strong>have had our jobs saved<\/strong>.<br \/>Without a doubt, it is <strong>the security tool<\/strong> par <strong>excellence<\/strong>.<br \/>Having a hosting with good backup management is essential today.<br \/>But, don&#8217;t worry, good hosts, such as <strong>Siteground<\/strong>, maintain <strong>excellent backup tools<\/strong> .<\/p>\n<p>In our case, our hosting provides us with a <strong>backup daily<\/strong> , so that, in case of problems, <strong>we can always go back to the previous day<\/strong>, losing only the work of the current day. <strong>It is advisable not to relax<\/strong> and, in addition, <strong>before updating plugins<\/strong>,<strong> themes<\/strong>, <strong>changing PHP version<\/strong> or including any <strong>additional software<\/strong> on our server, <strong>make an additional backup<\/strong>. This will allow us to <strong>react immediately<\/strong> to any incident that may arise. There are few minutes of caution that can save us the work done.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Siteground<\/strong> will always <strong>keep the last 30 backups visible<\/strong>, being able to go back up to a month if necessary. From each stored copy we can <strong>restore files<\/strong>, <strong>databases<\/strong> and <strong>e-mails<\/strong>. We can also download and install them in another environment. We also have a history of restores and downloads.<\/p>\n<p>Optionally, on demand (e.g. on very high-traffic sites), backups can be performed <strong>every hour.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Upgrades_and_maintenance\"><\/span>Upgrades and maintenance<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>WordPress<\/strong>, as you know, is one of the so-called <strong>&#8220;open source&#8221;<\/strong> software. That is, when we work in <strong>WordPress<\/strong>, we can <strong>modify the source code<\/strong> of the application. Thus, in this way, <strong>WordPress<\/strong> has risen to <strong>number 1 in the world CMS<\/strong> (Content Management Systems) software.<\/p>\n<p>Periodically, by applying <strong>new features<\/strong>, <strong>rectifying errors<\/strong> or applying <strong>security patches<\/strong> in the event of vulnerabilities, <strong>WordPress<\/strong> is updated. This task is <strong>VERY IMPORTANT <\/strong>and it is necessary that you follow the update instructions that, periodically, <strong>WordPress<\/strong> will leave on your website to keep it always, always, <strong>UPDATED.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The same happens with the <strong>plugins<\/strong> and <strong>themes<\/strong> that we are using. They also make updates and require us to incorporate them into our website. It is <strong>the best way to keep everything in order<\/strong>, free of vulnerable elements and with the maximum possible performance.<\/p>\n<p>It is convenient, just after updating our website, to visit it and check that our <strong>front-end<\/strong> is correct.<\/p>\n<p>We would then say that, like any software, like any company, our website also needs a <strong>maintenance program. <\/strong>Basically, a serious <strong>maintenance program<\/strong> for <strong>WordPress<\/strong> should contemplate the following points:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Permanent updates<\/strong>: As soon as possible, both of <strong>WordPress<\/strong> and of <strong>themes<\/strong> and <strong>plugins<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Daily monitoring of <strong>the health of the site<\/strong>: Visualizing the messages and dealing with each warning that is presented to us.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Monthly <strong>web performance<\/strong> monitoring: Using tools such as <strong>Page Speed Insights.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; Monthly SEO monitoring<\/strong>: Through tools such as <strong>Google Search Console<\/strong> or <strong>Bing WebMasters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Monthly traffic monitoring<\/strong>: Through tools such as <strong>Google Analytics<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Optimization_and_performance\"><\/span>Optimization and performance<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But as man does not live by bread alone and, to close the circumference, we need to take action to <strong>optimize the performance<\/strong> of our website and provide our users with <strong>the best browsing experience<\/strong>. This is a <strong>long-distance race<\/strong> and requires that we prepare our website, from the beginning, in <strong>healthy practices,<\/strong> <strong>application of media and appropriate software<\/strong> for its proper functioning.<\/p>\n<p>As in <strong>SEO,<\/strong> a good <strong>WordPress<\/strong> optimization is best achieved <strong>through a good plugin<\/strong>. At first, without a doubt, I put myself in the hands of <a title=\"WELL PLAYED ROCKET\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-rocket.me\/es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">WP Rocket<\/a>. This <strong>cache<\/strong>, <strong>CSS<\/strong>, and <strong>image<\/strong> optimization plugin is one of the most widely used and achieves very good loading times. I have even used it coexisting with <strong>Siteground&#8217;s <\/strong><a title=\"Speed Optimizer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.siteground.es\/wordpress-plugins\/siteground-optimizer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Speed Optimizer<\/a> and, although with some problems (<strong>Divi<\/strong> is also responsible), I have kept it until recently, when I have preferred to continue only with <strong>Siteground&#8217;s<\/strong> <strong>Speed Optimizer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Siteground<\/strong> makes <strong>some very complete plugins<\/strong>. Both <strong>Security Optimizer<\/strong> and <strong>Speed Optimizer<\/strong>, apart from being complete, work perfectly. In other words, what they do, they do well, and this, in <strong>WordPress<\/strong>, is very interesting. I know it seems like a <strong>truism <\/strong>(a fictional character who is attributed with presenting the obvious in a sententious way), but as <strong>Fernando Tellado<\/strong> would say: <em>&#8220;you can&#8217;t have everything&#8221;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The fact is that, with <strong>Speed Optimizer<\/strong> I have achieved a <strong>good balance<\/strong> and, although there is room for improvement, I have decided to wait for the release of <strong>Divi 5<\/strong> to see how to adjust the 3 tools (Divi, Speed Optimizer and WP Rocket).<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s see what settings <strong>Speed Optimizer<\/strong> provides us:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Cache<\/strong> settings: <strong>NGINX server cache accelerator<\/strong>, <strong>file cache <\/strong>settings (preheated every 12 hours), and <strong>Memcached object cache<\/strong>. <strong>Smart cache flushing<\/strong> , <strong>manual<\/strong> flushing, <strong>exclusion of certain URL&#8217;s<\/strong> from the cache, <strong>exclusion of contents<\/strong> from the cache (if required) and <strong>browser-specific cache<\/strong> (not applied, slows down a bit). In addition, you have a tool that can check if any URL on your website is cached or not.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Environment<\/strong> settings: <strong>forced HTTPs <\/strong>(secure connection), <strong>insecure content corrections<\/strong> (if presented), <strong>WordPress Heartbeat optimization<\/strong>, checking post editing pages every 15 seconds and your desktop and front page every 60 seconds (disabled in our case due to high consumption of server resources) and <strong>scheduled database maintenance<\/strong> (weekly cleaning).<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Front Page<\/strong> Settings: Minifying<strong> CSS<\/strong> files, merging<strong> CSS <\/strong>files, and preloading<strong> CSS files. <\/strong>Minimize, merge, and defer<strong> Javascript files. <\/strong>Minimize<strong> HTML<\/strong> output,<strong> optimize web fonts, <\/strong>preload fonts<strong> , <\/strong>remove<strong> static file strings, <\/strong>disable<strong> emojis <\/strong>, and<strong> external DNS preloads.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Media Settings<\/strong>: <strong>image compression<\/strong>, <strong>WebP image usage, lazy loading <\/strong>media, <strong>excluding CSS<\/strong> from lazy loading and <strong>maximum width<\/strong> of images (1920 px).<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Site <strong>Performance Dashboard<\/strong> : <strong>Page Speed Insights<\/strong> checker and history.<\/p>\n<p>On the side of our <strong>Siteground<\/strong> <strong>hosting<\/strong>, and optionally, we have another powerful tool to optimize the performance of our website.
