Charles<\/strong> was already Director of the Department of Industrial Design when Ray<\/strong> joined Cranbrook, <\/strong>and they would surely meet in collaboration with the “Organic Design Competition in Home Furnishings”, <\/strong>in which Eames and Saarinen <\/strong>participated in 1940<\/strong>. <\/strong> <\/p>\nAfter the end of his relationship with Catherina<\/strong> in 1940<\/strong>, Charles, <\/strong>although still married, <\/strong>discreetly began a relationship with Ray<\/strong>. Uncomfortable in hiding, Ray<\/strong> left Cranbrook<\/strong> and settled in New York. In their spare time, they both experimented with molded plywood<\/strong> to create furniture.<\/p>\nThanks to these experiments, a doctor friend, seeing the possibilities of this type of wood in the recovery of fractures<\/strong>, encouraged him to develop this application.
